Untitled Rayne Drabbles 1-25

Untitled Rayne Drabbles

Author: alleyne
Fandom: Firefly
Pairing: Jayne Cobb / River Tam
Rating: M
Prompt Set: LJ 1sentence’s Epsilon
Prompts: 1-25

Author’s Note: I didn’t nab this pairing for the LJ 1sentence community – the set just seemed like a good way for me to begin practicing my River/Jayne. I’m not strictly following the idea of writing one sentence per prompt, though!

.01 Motion

On a sleepless night, Jayne found his bench press commandeered by the girl and being used as a makeshift gymnastic horse. He couldn’t help but admire her strength and control, and the way her usually shapeless dress instead concealed and revealed long, toned legs in turn.

.02 Cool

“He is blue,” River commented from above the walkway, where she had been watching the mercenary, and realized Jayne had startled at her voice. “Blue like Miranda; the red is all gone.”

.03 Young

Jayne knew Crazy wasn’t really a child, not after what those butchers had done to her; River knew that in many ways the mercenary’s thoughts were like a scared little boy presenting a brave face to the world.

.04 Last

Jayne was a sore loser - all the more sore whenever the moonbrain girl used her creepy genius head to beat his team at hoopball.

.05 Wrong

Mal felt he had to give a stern talking to his mercenary after a typically muddled conversation with River. Jayne’s surprised scowl was pretty funny as he insisted that the gorram girl was crazy and there weren’t no ruttin’ funny business with her, and there ain’t never gonna be.

.06 Gentle

One hand supported her waist and the other held her much smaller one; River imagined it to be like a dove captured lightly in his grasp, and she smiled as she felt the others’ astonishment: nobody imagined Jayne could dance a waltz until Kaylee and Simon’s wedding.

.07 One

“They’re coming, I feel them. I feel them like fog, surrounding me, clouding me… wanting to get into my head, my thoughts. Two by two, but they are as one, one mind, one purpose – she is their purpose…” Jayne stared at the girl for a moment as she sat there babbling and shaking. He grabbed her wrists so he could look into her face to tell her, “No gorram way – you’re on my crew, no gorram way I’ll let ‘em take ya.”

.08 Thousand

Jayne began spending more and more time on the bridge with the fey pilot; they both liked to look out of Serenity’s eyes and gaze upon the thousands of stars in the blanket of space before them.

.09 King

Jayne’s bunk was the one place he could make entirely his own, a space he wouldn’t share with anyone and would change for no-one, and so he was very angry when he found his dirty pictures torn from the walls and the tart smell of apples lingering in his sheets, the same smell from the girly stuff Inara gave River on her birthday.

.10 Learn

River gave up trying to explain the reasoning behind Romeo and Juliet’s deaths to Jayne right after he made a lewd comment about impaling Juliet with another sort of dagger.

.11 Blur

The landscape blurred past them, and from both pilot and mercenary came an excited, triumphant whoop as their pursuers were shot down, allowing a clean getaway.

.12 Wait

Her lips were on his jaw and neck, inching up to his mouth, and he gasped out the words – “River, wait” – but she pressed him back and placed his hands on her hips and nothing in the ‘verse could stop them.

.13 Change

He watched her small, pale hands delicately yet firmly wrap the fresh bandage around his torso. The sight of her kneeling before him was way too exciting in spite of the pain.

.14 Command

In the sullen silence that followed Jayne’s pronouncement that he was in charge, the little pilot strode over and, flicking him on the nose, said, “Are not. Captain knows who will really watch over his flock while he is gone… and it isn’t the smelly ape-man.”

.15 Hold

Inara was shocked, but she understood discretion, and so kept the scene between River and Jayne she discovered in the hold during night-cycle a complete secret to everyone – except maybe River, who probably Read it in Inara’s eyes at breakfast the next cycle.

.16 Need

Jayne Cobb didn’t need anyone in the ‘verse, except for maybe his Ma, and so he was surprised to realise, when she insisted she needed him in order to fix herself, that he maybe needed her, too.

.17 Vision

“Always a bridesmaid, never a bride,” she said, a vision in scarlet, seeming sad as she met his eyes in the mirror, but Jayne Cobb wasn’t the marrying type and just wished River could be happy with what he had to offer her.

.18 Attention

Jayne had a dream where a sparrow was talking to him, demanding that he look at it, that he really see it. The dream became a nightmare as the little bird said, “Two by two, hands of blue,” and began to peck his eyes out.

.19 Soul

River’s late night wandering was interrupted outside the mess when she caught Jayne’s halting voice. Peeking around the corner, she was curious to see the hard mercenary stooped over the Shepherd’s Bible, fingers tracing each line of text as he struggled to sound out many of the words.

.20 Picture

“Kaylee, ya gotta stop followin’ me ‘round the gorram ship! Yer a mite irritatin’ with that there capture, and if ya don’t stop, I’ll take it when Mal ain’t lookin’ and -” Jayne didn’t have the chance to finish his threat as River danced into the room and, standing on the tips of her toes, pressed a finger to his lips to quiet him.

Looking back at the capture later, Jayne was surprised that it wasn’t too bad a picture. He didn’t even look angry, none.

.21 Fool

Jayne stopped in his tracks, his threatening advance towards the Doctor halted. “What did you say?” He growled.

“I said you’d be a fool to hurt my sister,” Simon repeated, smoothly.

“I got that, little man. Not sure I heard ya right on the second part.”

Simon looked caught out, and like the words he was about to say tasted like ash in his mouth, but his chin jutted our defiantly. “I said you’d be a bigger fool if you couldn’t see you were hurting her more by denying her.”

.22 Mad

Jayne was beginning to discover what the others had learnt a long time ago: it was a very bad idea to make River Tam angry.

.23 Now

The mercenary growled low in his throat when River’s fingers tangled in his hair and down the neck of his shirt. She massaged the muscles there for a moment, before lightly tickling the skin and moving away. She appeared in his field of vision, and he pretended to ignore her as she trailed her fingers along the tabletop. She continued to move away, but paused in the doorway. “Come with me,” she said to him without turning.

He continued to ignore her, eyes fixed to the magazine in his hands. “Jayne. Now.” She said, and somehow her voice was commanding and submissive all at once.

The mercenary swallowed hard and threw his magazine to the table as he scraped his chair back to follow.

.24 Child

Mal caught his pilot and his mercenary arguing over – of all things – a stuffed toy. Jayne had stolen it from little River and was taunting her with it. River’s eyes were full of tears, but there was a dangerous set to her jaw that made Mal quickly confiscate the pink and purple pony. He sent the psychic on her way, pony in arms, and turned to his mercenary. “Honestly, which one of you is supposed to be the child?” He snapped.

.25 Shadow

There was a darkness in Jayne’s face as he stood uncertainly in her doorway. “I had a dream that ya… called me down here.” He said awkwardly. “Is… uh, everything okay?”

First post!

Hooray for first post!

You may have known me as gehdra or funaga on Livejournal. LJ is rapidly becoming a place of emo fanboys and girls who overreact at every single little thing that 6A - and now SUP - do. So I decided to ditch it and come here instead :)

[Edit] Okay. I really don't feel I should need to explain or excuse my reasons for this. But here goes.

The emo members of fandom are abandoning ship, so they'll be there wherever I go :P That was more being sarcastic.

I have concerns about the company that have bought LJ. Whether or not they will affect me... *shrug* I'm sort of thinking better to be safe than sorry. After all the dramas 6A caused - and whether or not you get involved in fandom, you can't deny that Strikethrough 07 was sooo shoddily handled - selling LJ out to a dubious Russian company that no one seems to have any info on is the last straw. Also I don't really want to continue to support a company who seem to care so little for their clients... who can't even clarify their ToS to settle the issue once and for all... who don't put in the effort to distinguish between a community condoning and supplying child pornography, and a support group community for the victims of child endangerment/rape/whatever, or any other kind of abuse... who restrict plain old FICTION... well.

At the end of the day I am nothing if not a fangirl who wants to read smut.

As to the "how is this different from LJ, again?"... IJ uses the same client as LJ - it was open-sourced a few years back - which is why it is so similar. I'm hoping it's the administration that will make all the difference. squeaky seems to be incredibly genuine and interested... which is more than I can say of the rude and unhelpful 6A staff (and I hadn't even heard of SUP until a few days ago...)

[Edit 22 Jan '08]

Friends Only

I knew there was a great reason to have this journal Friends locked.

To all my friends without IJ accounts, I do genuinely apologise. I'll gladly add you if you make an IJ account.

To the person who pushed me to Friends Locking, cause I'm sure you might return one day... Guess what? I really don't care ^_^

So, whatever. You all know the drill...

Comment to be added :)
If I don't know you, tell me something about yourself.
